History of Athletics
Athletics appeared at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. Only men competed until women’s events were introduced at the 1928 Amsterdam Games. The current Summer Olympic programme includes 47 athletics events—24 for men and 23 for women.
Athletics awards 47 medal sets.
Rules of Athletics
The winner is the athlete or team achieving the best valid result in a final race or in the final attempts of a technical event.
Track events may be conducted through qualification rounds, quarter-finals and semi-finals. The qualifying process determines the athletes or teams contesting the final. Participant numbers are set by the competition regulations.
A country is represented by one team in relay events. Cross-country, road running, race walking and combined events are conducted as finals only.
