Qazaq kuresi is a national style of wrestling and an important part of the historical and cultural heritage of the Kazakh people. Competitions have traditionally been held during national celebrations and major festivities.

Training focuses on throwing and gripping techniques and on developing strength, endurance, agility and coordination. Participants also improve their sporting skills and prepare for competitions.

Rules of Qazaq Kuresi

Standing only: the entire bout is contested on the feet. Ground wrestling is prohibited.

No leg attacks: entries to the legs and hand grips below the waist are strictly prohibited. Touching the mat with a knee or hand results in a warning.

Permitted techniques: competitors may grip the jacket (shapan) and belt. Sweeps, hooks, trips, lifts and hip or back throws are permitted.

Main objective: a clean victory (taza zhenis) is awarded for throwing the opponent onto both shoulder blades.

Duration: five minutes for men and four minutes for women.

Tie-break (beldesu): if no winner is determined at the end of regulation time, one additional minute of belt wrestling is granted. Victory may alternatively be awarded to the competitor with fewer warnings.
