History of Boxing

Men’s boxing has been an Olympic sport since the 1904 St Louis Games.

Boxing was not contested at the 1912 Stockholm Games because of the host country’s position on the sport.

Following the 1948 Olympic Games, bronze-medal bouts were discontinued; both losing semi-finalists receive bronze medals.

In 2009, the IOC decided to include women’s boxing in the Olympic programme. It debuted at the 2012 London Games with three medal events.

Rules of Boxing

Rounds generally last three minutes. Each boxer enters from an assigned corner and returns there between rounds to rest and receive coaching and medical assistance. The referee supervises conduct in the ring, administers knockdown counts and penalises violations. Up to three judges may score the bout.

A boxer may win by knockout. If a boxer is knocked down and touches the canvas with any part of the body other than the feet, the referee begins a count. If the boxer rises within ten seconds, the bout continues; otherwise, a knockout is declared. A technical knockout may be declared by the referee, doctor or the boxer’s corner when the boxer is injured or unable to defend. If neither boxer wins inside the distance, the judges determine the result on points; a draw may also be recorded.

Boxing in Kazakhstan

The first boxing championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan was held in Almaty in 1946.

The national boxing federation was established in 1959 on the basis of the republican boxing section founded in 1941.

In 1992, the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation became a member of AIBA and joined the Asian Boxing Confederation.

By 1992, Kazakhstan’s boxers had won 157 medals at USSR and CIS championships: 36 gold, 44 silver and 77 bronze.
