The official opening of the Kazakh National University of Sports took place in Astana, serving as a venue for several historic world-class sporting events.

As part of the ceremony, Kazakhstan officially secured the right to host the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals Astana 2027. The official agreement signing ceremony was held in Astana. The document establishes the capital of Kazakhstan as the host city for the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals Astana 2027, one of the most significant events in the international calendar for this sport.

The ceremony was attended by ITTF President Petra Sörling, Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerbol Myrzabossynov, Mayor of Astana Zhenis Kassymbek, Founder of the Kazakh National University of Sports Nurasyl Medeu, and President of the Table Tennis Federation of the Republic of Kazakhstan Daniyar Abulgazin.

Securing the right to host the world championship confirms the growing trust of international sports organizations in Kazakhstan as a nation capable of hosting top-tier competitions. It is expected that the 2027 World Championships will bring together the strongest players on the planet, representatives of national federations, international organizations, thousands of fans, and members of the global media.

It is worth noting that Kazakhstan will host the WTT Star Contender Astana – President’s Cup 2026 for the first time – one of the six most prestigious tournaments of the World Table Tennis (WTT) world tour, which will take place from September 15 to 20, 2026. The tournament is part of the official World Table Tennis (WTT) calendar and is considered one of the most prestigious stages of the world professional tour. The WTT Star Contender series is held only six times a year, and Kazakhstan has received the right to host a competition of this level for the first time.

Approximately 190 athletes from more than 30 countries will arrive in Astana, including representatives from China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, France, Germany, Brazil, Sweden, Denmark, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Singapore, Egypt, Portugal, Croatia, Slovenia, Romania, Kazakhstan, and other states. Up to 20 Kazakhstani athletes are expected to compete in the tournament.

The event is organized by the Nomad Table Tennis Academy in collaboration with World Table Tennis (WTT), with the support of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Department of Physical Culture and Sports of the Astana City Akimat.

Hosting two major international events simultaneously – the WTT Star Contender Astana – President’s Cup 2026 and the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals Astana 2027 – strengthens Kazakhstan's position as a key hub for global table tennis. For the country, this is not only recognition of its high level of international event organization but also a powerful impetus for the development of sports infrastructure, tourism, the training of domestic athletes, and the strengthening of Kazakhstan's international image as a global sports venue.
